On Monday, March 4, Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) took decisive action by sealing several schools, hotels, and hospitals for tax evasion and failure to submit annual tax returns.
Emmanuel Agema, the acting chairman of BIRS, emphasized that the enforcement was conducted to uphold tax compliance, essential for the state’s developmental initiatives. Among the establishments affected were Emory Specialist Hospital, Vincal Pharmacy, Graceland Suites, City Hospital, Peniel College, ECWA Secondary School, Rose Asase Schools, New Hotel Lucia, and Riverside Hotel, all situated in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
Agema clarified that the closure of these facilities became imperative due to their prolonged failure to submit annual returns and fulfill their tax obligations to the state government, despite multiple notices and reminders. He revealed that a warrant to seal these entities was issued by the state Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, in accordance with Section 104 of the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 and Section 41(1)(3)(4) of the Benue State Internal Revenue Law 2022.
Underscoring the agency’s dedication to ensuring tax compliance, Agema reaffirmed their commitment to employing legal measures, including enforcement of compliance and other regulatory actions, to prevent taxpayers from defaulting.
