Crisis In Rivers: Lawmakers Reveal Scheme To Block Fubara Impeachment
The Rivers State House of Assembly has sounded the alarm over what it described as secretive attempts by unidentified individuals to derail the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu through judicial means.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement dated January 11, 2026, the Assembly disclosed that it had received credible intelligence indicating that certain persons were seeking to obtain ex parte court orders from Rivers State High Courts outside the Port Harcourt Judicial Division. The alleged aim, the House said, is to unlawfully restrain lawmakers from carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
The statement, signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi Alabo George, warned that any such action would amount to a direct subversion of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The lawmakers cited Sections 272(3) and 188(10) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which restrict the jurisdiction of courts in matters relating to the tenure of elected officials and explicitly prohibit judicial interference in impeachment proceedings.
The Assembly also referenced recent rulings of the Court of Appeal, noting that similar ex parte orders issued in past impeachment cases had been set aside by the appellate court.
According to the statement, the affected officeholders have already been properly served with notices detailing allegations of gross misconduct and are required to respond in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The House condemned what it described as “subterranean tactics” aimed at obstructing due process, stressing that such actions should give way to lawful engagement with the constitutional process.
With the approval of the Speaker, Martin Chike Amaewhule, the Assembly urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law.
It reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional democracy, insisting that it would not be deterred or intimidated by attempts to discredit the Assembly or undermine its authority.
