In a statement released by EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale on Friday, Asefon Dayo made this appeal during a courtesy visit to EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede’s office on Thursday. He emphasized that the rise in cybercrimes is linked to drug abuse, urging both agencies to work together to address this issue.

Asefon Dayo expressed concern that drug intake is driving youth involvement in internet crimes and called for increased awareness through joint efforts by EFCC and NDLEA. He highlighted the involvement of some lecturers and campus workers in these crimes and proposed the establishment of EFCC Clubs on every campus in Nigeria to educate students about the dangers of corruption.

While suggesting that the EFCC consider granting amnesty to internet fraudsters serving jail terms to facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, Asefon Dayo commended the Commission’s new protocol on night operations. He noted that criminals often exploit nocturnal activities to carry out illegal actions under the guise of the EFCC.

In response, the EFCC chairman emphasized the Commission’s openness to collaboration with various interest groups, particularly student unions committed to fighting corruption and financial crimes. He clarified that his concerns about the prevalence of internet crimes among youths were misunderstood, asserting that youths can thrive by engaging in lawful activities.
