Dangote Distances Himself From Wrongdoing As Emefiele Confronts New Charges In Forex Scandal
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is intensifying its investigation into alleged fraudulent foreign exchange allocations involving the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. The investigation, independent of a separate report by special investigator Jim Obazee appointed by President Bola Tinubu to probe the CBN, is delving into Emefiele’s suspected involvement in fraudulent forex transactions. The anti-graft agency has summoned senior officials from these entities, instructing them to provide detailed documents of their foreign exchange transactions spanning the last nine years.
While the details of the 85 entities remain unverified independently, reliable sources indicate that the Dangote Group and BUA Plc are among those under scrutiny. The EFCC’s actions are part of a comprehensive, in-depth investigation into preferential foreign exchange allocations allegedly made by Emefiele, disregarding financial regulations and the CBN Act.
Operatives of the EFCC recently raided the headquarters of Dangote Industries Limited and the BUA Towers in Lagos, gathering documents related to foreign exchange transactions. While Dangote Group confirmed the raid and cooperated with supplying relevant documents, BUA maintained that its offices were not raided.
The EFCC is focused on uncovering preferential foreign exchange allocations made without the approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The investigation suggests that these allocations served as a conduit for money laundering through forex transactions and Bureau De Change operators, involving Emefiele and his associates.
An EFCC source revealed that the ongoing probe has led to additional discoveries, prompting the likelihood of amending charges against the former CBN governor. The charges are expected to include money laundering, abuse of office, and potentially, abuse of office involving the declaration of assets. Lawyers from the commission are working on amending the charges, and Emefiele is expected to respond to these charges once finalized.
The EFCC, having obtained documents during the raids, continues its rigorous investigation, emphasizing its independence from the concurrent probe by Obazee. Despite repeated attempts for comments on the recent developments, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, declined to provide any statements.
