The extension was announced following INEC’s weekly meeting on Thursday, during which the Commission reviewed ongoing preparations for the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in the state.
Originally set to conclude on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the CVR will now continue until Sunday, July 20, 2025. The announcement was made in an official statement by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.
“The Commission is encouraged by the impressive turnout of registrants across the 326 registration centres in Anambra and the peaceful conduct of the exercise,” Olumekun noted, emphasizing that the extension is in direct response to citizens’ requests.
As of Wednesday, July 16—just nine days into the exercise—INEC reported that 96,085 new voters had registered, averaging about 10,600 registrations per day. Additionally, 12,595 individuals submitted applications for transfers within and outside the state, while 7,061 others sought updates or replacements for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Olumekun also provided a demographic breakdown, revealing that 56,017 registrants (58%) are female, while 50,429 (52.48%) are youth aged between 18 and 34.
After the conclusion of the registration period, INEC will publish a preliminary voter register for public scrutiny, in line with legal requirements. This will be followed by a claims and objections phase, and a subsequent data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
INEC has pledged to release a detailed demographic analysis of the new registrants—including age, gender, occupation, and disability status—in due course.
The Commission called on all eligible voters in Anambra State who have not yet registered to seize the opportunity presented by the extended window and ensure their participation in the democratic process.
