This was disclosed on Friday, April 11, 2025, by Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, in an official statement.
According to Mu’azu, the operation was launched based on credible intelligence and targeted strategic criminal hideouts in the region. He stated that Gwaska, who recently relocated from Danmusa Local Government Area to Mununu Forest, was successfully tracked and killed during the offensive.
Security operatives also recovered and destroyed two machine guns, several locally made shotguns, and additional weaponry to prevent further use by terrorists.
Mu’azu detailed:
“On April 10, 2025, a joint operation by the Nigerian Army’s 17th Brigade and the 213 Forward Operating Base (FOB), supported by the Nigerian Air Force, carried out a coordinated strike on identified terrorist enclaves in Mununu Bakai, Zango, Jeka Arera, Malali, and Ruwan Godiya, covering Kankara and Faskari LGAs.
“This precision strike, driven by actionable intelligence, led to the elimination of Gwaska, a high-value target serving as the deputy to an ISWAP-affiliated commander.”
In a separate operation, troops ambushed a key bandit route near Dutsen Wori along the Dandume-Kandamba axis, close to the Faskari and Sabuwa LGA boundaries. The forces recovered seven motorcycles, while four more were seen fleeing into the forest. The attackers were tracked back to their base at Maigora/Doroyi camp in Faskari.
Mu’azu added, “The operation, carried out at approximately 3:45 a.m., resulted in the death of six additional bandits, including another commander, while several others sustained gunshot injuries as they escaped. Importantly, no casualties were recorded among the security personnel.”
