The Deputy Governor, Mr Monday Onyeme, issued the directive during a recent meeting aimed at resolving longstanding disputes involving Ogwashi-Uku’s kingship and adjacent communities. He mandated a temporary halt to all land transactions in disputed areas pending further notice.
However, in response to what he termed a misunderstanding, the Palace Secretary, Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, clarified that the meeting primarily addressed boundary disputes, not kingship issues. He highlighted the attendance of suspended chiefs who expressed grievances over disciplinary actions taken by the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku.
Emordi reiterated the community’s adherence to a court injunction barring government interference in local land management matters. He called upon the state government to honor judicial rulings regarding Ogwashi-Uku’s internal affairs.
This development underscores ongoing tensions between governmental directives and community autonomy in Delta State’s land administration policies.
