Delta Police PRO Sparks Debate: Officers Don’t Need Warrant To Search You (Video)
The Delta State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, has asserted that police officers are legally allowed to search individuals’ pockets and bags without a warrant.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Edafe made the statement via his X handle on Saturday, August 23, while presenting a suspected thief caught in possession of a firearm.
He wrote:
“Do the police have the right to search you randomly without a search warrant? The answer is yes. We cannot search your houses or phones without a warrant, but searching your person, bag, or pockets is permitted.
This young man was spotted at a club around 5 a.m. acting suspiciously. Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) intercepted and searched him, recovering a firearm. Listen to his explanation for bringing the gun to the club.”
In a video, Edafe explained that the RRS operatives, during a visibility patrol along DBS Road near Don and Master, noticed the suspect carrying a bag suspiciously.
He said:
“While on patrol, our officers intercepted this young man. Upon searching his bag, they discovered a gun, along with a magazine and ammunition.”
Further investigations revealed the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Bassey Udoh from Akwa Ibom, had been involved in stealing generators.
Edafe added:
“Udoh frequently climbed fences or used gates to break into houses at night, typically between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., to steal generators.”
The suspect, who admitted living in Delta State for three years, confessed to stealing generators from nine houses over the past two months.
He said:
“I’ve not entered more than nine houses. Some generators sell for N35,000 or N40,000.”
Regarding the gun, Udoh claimed he had it not for robbery, but to show off at a club.
“I held the gun for flexing at a club. I didn’t use it to rob anyone. I kept it at my waist,” he said.
