In this tradition, a skilled storyteller shares fascinating and sometimes mythical stories with a captivated audience. The stories can range from tales of bravery and adventure to cautionary tales about the consequences of bad behaviour.
One of the unique aspects of “Tales by Moonlight” is the use of oral storytelling as opposed to written literature. The storyteller uses their voice, gestures, and expressions to convey the story and bring it to life.
This tradition is still practiced in many African communities today and is often used as a way to preserve cultural heritage and pass down important lessons from one generation to the next. It is a reminder of the power of storytelling and the importance of community in preserving traditions and culture.
Omokri, 49 therefore urged the incoming administration which is that of Bola Tinubu to reinstate this program because of the advantage to children.
He wrote:
“Nigeria needs to bring back Tales by Moonlight back. So our children can be indoctrinated into Nigerian culture. Our kids should not only sing English nursery rhymes. We have terrific children’s games and singalongs, like Boju Boju, Che Che Kule, etc. We are losing our culture, and our heritage is dying out. It is the duty of the government to promote Nigerian indigenous culture. No one will do it for us. Vultures will hound a people who lose their cultures.”
