Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this development during plenary on Wednesday. The nominees are Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Ayodele Oke.

“The list currently contains three names; I am confident that more will follow,” Akpabio said after reading the president’s letter.

Earlier, in a September interview, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar addressed concerns that Nigeria’s diplomatic missions were hampered by the absence of appointed ambassadors.

“All our embassies are functioning efficiently. The chargé d’affaires at each mission is performing responsibilities effectively. The absence of ambassadors has not created a vacuum,” Tuggar explained.

He further noted that while an ambassador serves as head of mission, the diplomatic hierarchy—including deputies, counsellors, and career officers—ensures daily operations continue seamlessly.

“Diplomacy is not a one-man show; the system is designed to operate even in the absence of an ambassador,” he said.

Tuggar added that the appointment of ambassadors is solely the president’s prerogative and would occur at the appropriate time.

“President Tinubu is reviewing the matter, and when ready, the names will be officially announced. Meanwhile, our missions remain active,” he stressed.

The minister emphasized that Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives are ongoing, with embassies continuing to facilitate trade, investment, consular services, and cultural exchanges.

“Nigerians abroad still have access to services, and our engagement with host countries remains strong,” Tuggar concluded.
