Doyin Okupe Explains Why Tinubu Shouldn’t Be Blamed For Buhari’s FailuresDr. Doyin Okupe, former presidential media aide, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not be held accountable for the economic challenges and mismanagement during the Muhammadu Buhari administration. In an interview with The Sun, Okupe described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a “conglomerate of strange bedfellows” and noted that the party’s diverse coalition, including groups like the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), created a shaky foundation for governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
“Tinubu cannot be held responsible for the administration before him,” Okupe explained. While acknowledging Tinubu’s significant role in bringing Muhammadu Buhari to power, he stressed that the current government should be evaluated on its own merits.
Okupe dismissed claims that the manufacturing sector had collapsed and that foreign direct investments were declining. He pointed to recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which showed a 3% growth in the country’s GDP and notable improvements in the manufacturing sector. “Foreign direct investment is increasing,” he added, also noting that Tinubu’s administration had made significant progress in addressing key financial issues, including the resolution of a $7 billion debt owed to international airlines.
On the nation’s challenges, Okupe urged Nigerians to adopt a realistic perspective, explaining that the deep-rooted problems inherited from the previous administration could not be resolved overnight. “If you’ve had rottenness for more than eight years, do you think it can be fixed in 18 months? It cannot,” he argued.
Regarding the issue of out-of-school children and rising youth unrest, particularly in Northern Nigeria, Okupe attributed the situation to the neglect of social programs such as the Almajiri schools initiated by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He also called for greater recognition of Tinubu’s reformist agenda, comparing it to the long-term transformation led by Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore. “We’ve got a reformer in the villa, somebody who says, ‘I take responsibility, and I’m going to try to reform this country,’” Okupe said.
Concluding his remarks, Okupe emphasized the importance of national unity and support for the administration’s reform efforts, urging Nigerians to rally behind the government’s initiatives rather than demonize it. “Let us agree, let us be factual,” he concluded.
