This renewed scrutiny follows Odili’s acquisition of a perpetual injunction towards the end of his eight-year tenure, as he is now compelled to explain the flow of such a substantial sum into his private account or its expenditure during his administration.

Odili’s predicament originated during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s era when he pursued the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Allegations of financial impropriety in his administration surfaced, leading to the termination of his presidential ambitions.

Notably, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who chaired the EFCC during that period, currently serves as the National Security Adviser to President Bola Tinubu. During the initial probe, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, then Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, faced arrest by the EFCC to extract crucial information about the state’s financial transactions.

In 2008, Odili obtained a Federal High Court’s perpetual injunction preventing the EFCC and its officials from investigating the financial records of the Rivers State government, including himself and any state official involved in the matter.

After a prolonged interval, the EFCC has now announced its intention to revisit the alleged fraud involving the former governor. It remains unclear whether this renewed investigation is connected to the current political turmoil in the state, as Odili is not the sole former governor undergoing scrutiny by the anti-graft agency.
