Abubakar Ahmad Sirika, brother of the former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, faced questioning by the anti-graft agency in connection with suspicions that the contracts in question were awarded to him by his brother during his tenure.

Abubakar was apprehended by the EFCC on Sunday as part of their investigation into alleged fraudulent activities within the Ministry of Aviation during the ex-minister’s term. The commission is delving into various offenses, including conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of public funds, contract inflation, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering.

Of the total contract amount, approximately N3,212,258,930.18 has been traced to Engirios Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Abubakar, who holds a Level-16 position and serves as a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

The investigation has revealed that Abubakar Sirika is identified as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Engirios Nigeria Limited and the sole signatory to the company’s two bank accounts. The four contracts awarded to Abubakar’s company during his brother’s tenure include the construction of the Terminal Building in Katsina Airport, Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Centre in Katsina Airport, procurement and installation of equipment in Aviation House, Abuja, and the acquisition of aircraft and simulator for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria.

EFCC’s scrutiny has exposed that these contracts, totaling about N8,069,176,864.00, were not executed. Out of this amount, N3,212,258,930.18 was paid to Engirios Nigeria Limited, and investigations indicate that Abubakar allegedly transferred these funds to various companies and individuals. Despite these payments, there is no evidence of work being carried out on any of the contract items to date.

The arrest of Abubakar on Sunday has led to extensive questioning, during which he has reportedly provided the EFCC with valuable information regarding the financial activities of the Ministry of Aviation during his elder brother’s leadership.

The EFCC’s official revealed that suspicions revolve around the ex-Minister knowingly awarding contracts to his brother, who has been a senior civil servant since 2000. The controversial contracts were issued at various times, with the last one granted just 24 days before the end of the Buhari administration’s tenure.

In addition to this investigation, the EFCC is reportedly looking into the Nigeria Air controversy, including concerns about the allocated funds for the project. While critics argue that N85 billion was expended, Hadi Sirika maintains that only N5 billion was approved, of which N3 billion was released.
