It prompts us to ponder: Why do we fast? Some view it as a spiritual fortification against adversities, while others perceive it as a means of drawing nearer to God.
For some Christians, fasting serves as a conduit to receive the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.
Those inclined towards the former belief suggest that during times of vulnerability, our prayers amidst fasting act as a plea to God for intervention, ensuring His divine protection. When God fights on our behalf, victory is inevitable, echoing the sentiments expressed by King David in Psalm 35:1.
The narrative of Jesus fasting for forty days and nights, as documented in Matthew 4:1-2, exemplifies the synergy between the Spirit and the flesh in overcoming challenges.
Similarly, Christians fasting to welcome the Holy Spirit recognize the necessity of His presence in their lives, as emphasized by Jesus in John 14:16-17. Unlike Jesus, who had the Holy Spirit already, our invitation is essential for His indwelling, underscoring the importance of spiritual rebirth for effective fasting.
Turning our focus to the empowerment needed for safeguarding our families against deceitful adversaries, Pastor J.T. Kalejaiye of R.C.C.G. aptly terms them “unfriendly friends.” For instance, a woman waiting upon the Lord may face threats from what the Bible describes as “strange women” infiltrating marital harmony.
The means through which these intruders enter vary—from familial pressures to the company one keeps, or even the vulnerability of a wayward spouse. In-law interference, disguised as concern, often leads to misguided actions, including suggestions of polygamy or resorting to occult practices.
However, amidst these challenges, prayer emerges as our most potent weapon. Through fasting and supplication, we fortify our defenses against such infiltrations, trusting in God’s intervention to preserve our unions.
Illustrating this, testimonies abound of God’s intervention, overturning schemes of deceit and restoring marital sanctity. In moments of trial, wisdom and faith guide us, enabling us to navigate tumultuous waters with divine assurance.
May these narratives serve as reminders of the power of prayer and the faithfulness of God in safeguarding our homes from the snares of the enemy.
