The ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, have seen a notable absence of participation from the South-East states. Ahead of the protest, various Igbo leaders and organizations, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, advised against participation. They cautioned that joining the protests, particularly in other regions, could lead to accusations of the Igbo orchestrating unrest, which might result in violence against their properties.
In response to these warnings, the South-East experienced a complete boycott of the protests during the first three days. Observers, including DAILY POST correspondents, confirmed that there were no visible protests across the South-East.
In contrast to other regions where traders and citizens joined the protests, South-East residents avoided direct involvement. In Awka, Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, a known protest venue, was empty on August 1, while other public spaces also remained quiet.
Instead, the South-East adopted unconventional protest methods. Many residents engaged in recreational activities, such as playing football in the streets or socializing in beer parlours, as their form of protest. Youths in Awka, for instance, played football on deserted roads, while others gathered at local drinking spots, making light of the situation.
Leaders in the South-East, including Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah and Minister of Works Dave Umahi, praised the region’s approach. They argued that the decision to abstain from protests prevented potential violence and demonstrated a commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Governor Mbah highlighted the importance of patience and hard work, while Umahi emphasized recent infrastructural developments as reasons for supporting the current government.
The National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, also supported the South-East’s decision, asserting that past marginalization made participation in the protest unwise. He reiterated that the region’s silence was a form of protest in itself, signaling support for President Tinubu’s governance.
In a related development, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo focused on local solutions to food insecurity by launching an agricultural initiative in Amansea. This effort aims to encourage self-reliance and reduce dependence on external aid amid rising food prices.
Dr. Nelson Omenugha, convener of Youths Earnestly Support Soludo (YESS), attributed the lack of protest in Anambra to proactive empowerment programs that kept the youth engaged and productive. He stressed that such initiatives, rather than protests, were more beneficial for addressing local issues.
