According to reports, a series of deadly attacks in Bassa Local Government Area has claimed the lives of over 100 residents within just two weeks. The most recent assault occurred in the early hours of Monday, when armed assailants stormed Zike and Kimakpa villages in Kwall District, under the Iregwe Chiefdom, killing more than 50 people, destroying homes, and leaving a trail of devastation.
In a statewide broadcast following the attacks, Governor Muftwang reaffirmed his administration’s determination to protect lives and prevent the normalization of violence in Plateau.
“As your governor, I remain unwavering in my stand: Plateau shall not be subdued by fear, and we will never accept bloodshed as a way of life,” he said.
He emphasized that the state’s longstanding identity as a peaceful and united society remains intact.
“The Plateau spirit is one of resilience. We are a people of peace, hospitality, and unity—across all religious and ethnic divides. Those who aim to divide us will fail. Plateau will continue to rise and nothing can stop it,” Muftwang declared.
“To the murderers and their backers, your time is up. Your atrocities will not go unpunished. You may hide, but justice will find you.”
He assured citizens that his government is fully committed to its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding lives and properties, noting that immediate steps are being taken to forestall further attacks.
“My government is not sleeping. We are more determined than ever to respond decisively. Our efforts to uphold law and order across all local government areas are being intensified,” he said.
As part of the state’s response, Governor Muftwang called on traditional rulers and local communities to strengthen grassroots security.
“We must protect our communities in accordance with the law. Therefore, we are reactivating community-based response mechanisms,” he stated.
He encouraged traditional leaders and youth groups to revive local vigilante networks and conduct night patrols in collaboration with security agencies.
To further curb insecurity, Muftwang also rolled out new security directives, effective Wednesday, April 16:
-
Night grazing of cattle is now prohibited.
-
Cattle transportation by vehicle is banned after 7 p.m.
-
The use of motorcycles is restricted from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. across the state until further notice.
