Transitioning to the business realm, Williams later reentered public service as a Lagos State Commissioner under Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s Military Administration. In the mid-1990s, driven by a desire to shape policy, he ventured into politics. He traversed party affiliations, from the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) after the suspicious death of UNCP leader General Sani Abacha. Eventually, he settled with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the wake of their 2003 electoral victory led by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Having contested twice in Lagos State Governorship elections, Williams aimed for the PDP Gubernatorial nomination for Lagos State in 2006. His goal was to wrest control from the Alliance for Democracy Party. Tragically, on July 27, 2006, Williams was discovered bound, strangled, and stabbed at his home in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi—a wealthy enclave in Lagos.

During the trial, Professor John Obafunwa, Chief Forensic Pathologist of Lagos State, testified that Williams died from manual strangulation, resulting in asphyxia. The post-mortem examination revealed defensive wounds, with deep bruises on the arms and legs indicating an attempt to resist the assailant.

The forensic investigation involved meticulous steps to preserve evidence, such as wrapping the deceased’s hands with a newspaper. Mr. Obafunwa detailed the crime scene’s chaos and the subsequent post-mortem examination at Creek Military Hospital, uncovering a cut on Williams’ forehead and bruises around his neck.

Various samples, including blood, urine, eye fluids, stomach contents, and nail scrapings, were collected for forensic analysis. The court was informed that an X-ray revealed a fracture of the thyroid cartilage (neck bone).

The defense counsel opted not to cross-examine Mr. Obafunwa. Subsequently, on July 28, 2006, two individuals, including Williams’ campaign manager and Senator Kingsley Adeseye Ogunlewe, were arrested in connection with his death. Ogunlewe, a former Works Minister, was also aspiring to be the PDP Gubernatorial candidate.

Funsho Williams found his final resting place at the Victoria Court Cemetery, Lagos, leaving behind a legacy marred by a tragic and unresolved demise.
