Human rights advocate Femi Falana insists that the 317 individuals deported from Lagos to Osun must be returned to Lagos, as reported by Vanguard. Falana stressed this in a statement released on Thursday.
Over the weekend, 317 Nigerian citizens, originally from Osun State, were rounded up in various areas of Lagos and transported to Osun State in luxury buses. They were dropped off at different locations in Osun State, including Ilesa-Akure Express junction, Breweries, Ilesa – Ibodi – Iginla to Ife Express junction, Osun Ankara Express junction, Imelu Express junction, and Iperindo Express junction.
Addressing the illegal deportation, the Lagos State Police Command explained that they conduct raids on black spots periodically and only arraign suspects found guilty in competent courts after thorough screenings.
The Lagos State Government responded officially, stating that 450 individuals, identified as miscreants, were rescued over the weekend. Of these, 371 requested assistance to return to their respective states due to hardships faced in Lagos, while 79 were accommodated in government facilities for rehabilitation after showing signs of illness.
Falana disputed the government’s account, asserting that the deportees were abducted and forcibly transported without consent. He emphasized that this action violated their constitutional right to freedom of movement as enshrined in Section 41.
Citing legal precedents, Falana highlighted the illegality of mass expulsion targeting specific groups, as prohibited by the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.
He called upon Governor Sanwoolu to ensure the return of the deported individuals to Lagos and urged Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to assist in their resettlement. Falana also demanded accountability for the officials responsible for the illegal deportation to prevent similar occurrences.
As the Chair of the Alliance on Surviving Covid 19 and Beyond (ASCAB), Falana emphasized the equal rights of the poor and rich to freedom in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
