On Thursday, March 13, Nigerians were once again informed that the Port Harcourt Refinery would soon be operational, with promises of it becoming fully functional within two weeks.

During an interactive session with the Senate, Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), disclosed this assurance. He emphasized that meeting the delivery date for the Port Harcourt and other refineries was of utmost importance.

NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye, in a statement, quoted Kyari affirming, “We will ensure that the commitments we made regarding the refurbishment of these refineries are fulfilled. We achieved mechanical completion of PHRC in December. Currently, crude oil is stocked in it, undergoing regulatory compliance tests before recommencing operations. I guarantee this refinery will be operational within the next two weeks.”

Kyari highlighted the receipt of 450,000 barrels of crude for processing at the Port Harcourt refinery since its mechanical completion in December. He appealed for the collaboration of all stakeholders in the rehabilitation process, underscoring the collective duty of serving the nation faithfully.

The statement also mentioned that the Senate Ad-hoc Committee would soon visit the refineries in Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt for a firsthand assessment of progress.

While such announcements should typically be met with jubilation, the reaction among Nigerians has been one of frustration and anger. Many express skepticism, as similar assurances have been made in the past without tangible outcomes.
