Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, made this known while addressing participants at the First Plenary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at St. Gabriel’s Chaplaincy, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja.

Akume noted that the country’s security challenges did not begin under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stressing that insecurity is a global phenomenon affecting even developed nations.

“Insecurity is not unique to Nigeria; it is a worldwide challenge. Even advanced countries are grappling with similar issues,” he said.

Describing the wave of killings as unfortunate, the SGF emphasized that the violence predates the current administration.

On the contentious issue of reintegrating former insurgents, Akume clarified that discussions about incorporating ex-Boko Haram members into the military occurred under a previous administration but were strongly resisted and ultimately not implemented.

“There were attempts to absorb them into the military, but that move was resisted and did not materialize,” he explained.

He expressed hope that such proposals would not resurface without thorough scrutiny and urged stakeholders, including religious leaders, to examine the security situation objectively and with a comprehensive understanding of its complexities.

Referring to security briefings, Akume claimed that several suspects arrested in connection with recent attacks were foreign nationals. According to him, many of them neither speak English nor fluent Hausa but communicate in French.

“Some of those arrested speak poor Hausa and no English; instead, they speak French. Nigeria is not a French-speaking country,” he stated.

While acknowledging that extremist groups such as Boko Haram originated in Nigeria, Akume maintained that many of the current attackers operating in forests and rural communities, particularly in parts of Niger State and other troubled regions, are believed to be non-Nigerians.

“The majority of those carrying out the killings are from outside the country. That is based on the security reports available to us,” he said.

Citing recent drone operations in Sokoto State, the SGF rejected claims that the government was inactive in tackling insecurity. He disclosed that the United States is collaborating with Nigeria on security efforts.

“It is not as though we are idle. The United States is cooperating with us; we are working together,” he said.

Akume further revealed that President Tinubu’s recent visit to Turkey was partly aimed at acquiring additional military equipment, including drones and other advanced weapons systems, to bolster Nigeria’s defense capabilities.

“The President’s trip to Turkey was primarily to procure more armaments, including drones. We are taking concrete steps,” he added.
