In a recent incident, Agatha’s tricycle was unjustly impounded by ARTMA officials, led by someone named Goodluck, for over two weeks on false claims of traffic rule violations. Agatha revealed that her real offense was challenging gender norms by entering an occupation predominantly perceived as male-dominated. Her male colleagues, feeling threatened by her popularity among passengers, allegedly collaborated with ARTMA officials to harass her.
Agatha plies the Aroma-Federal Secretariat route, where she is the sole female among 12 tricycle operators. She recounted facing daily harassment from both male colleagues and ARTMA officials, who questioned her choice of occupation and allegedly conspired to force her out of the trade. The harassment began shortly after she started riding a tricycle in June 2023.
Despite complying with strict rules and regulations imposed by her male counterparts and paying levies, Agatha continued to face unwarranted challenges. ARTMA officials allegedly concocted accusations such as route violations to stop her on the road, discharge her passengers forcefully, and detain her and her tricycle until the end of the workday. Agatha expressed frustration at being constantly chased away and detained for no legitimate reason, emphasizing that she registered to operate on the Aroma-Federal Secretariat route.
Agatha could not recall the exact number of times ARTMA officials had stopped her on the road, but she mentioned that they seized her tricycle about four times. Each time, they reportedly delayed her recovery and created unnecessary stress, with the most recent incident occurring on January 30 when they towed her tricycle to their office behind the Government House in Awka.
When questioned about the officials’ uniform, Agatha explained that they were not always in uniform during their interventions. She highlighted the baseless reasons they provided to their superiors, such as concocted accusations of route violations, in their attempts to justify impounding her tricycle.
Agatha Umeh remains determined to continue her tricycle operation despite the challenges, expressing the need for support and understanding in breaking gender barriers within the transportation sector.
