According to reports, the students from the nursing school rejected a song introduced by the Master of Ceremony (MC), who referred to the President’s wife as the “mother of the nation.” The students, however, countered, stating that Mrs. Tinubu was the MC’s mother, not theirs or that of the nation.
In response, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, Busola Kukoyi, released a statement on Friday emphasizing that educational institutions should create an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum.
Kukoyi stated that the purpose of the First Lady’s visit was to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals.
The statement reads: “The Office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has taken note of a video circulating on social media, capturing chants welcoming both the First Lady of Delta State and the First Lady of Nigeria during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 Professional Kits to Midwives in the South-South zone at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, Delta State, on Tuesday, 25th March 2025.
“The primary goal of the event was to motivate midwives across the nation to reduce infant and maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria. Her Excellency greatly values the warm reception from the Delta State Government, the people of Delta State, and the enthusiasm shown by nurses, midwives, women groups, and student nurses present.
“However, a portion of the video, reportedly recorded by some students, displayed a spontaneous and playful twist to the welcome song. It has come to our attention that some students from the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences were issued a query regarding their participation in the chants. While the Office of the First Lady respects institutions’ right to maintain discipline, it is essential to acknowledge that students, in moments of excitement, may express themselves light-heartedly and jovially.
“The Office of the First Lady believes educational institutions should encourage a safe environment for expression while upholding decorum. The First Lady’s visit aimed to inspire and motivate healthcare professionals, and it is our hope that the event remains a positive and encouraging experience for everyone involved.
“We trust that the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences will approach this issue with fairness and understanding, ensuring students can thrive in an atmosphere that balances discipline with free expression.”
