According to the former military officer, General Buhari’s eight-year term witnessed a lack of meaningful efforts in the fight against terrorism, with some actions exacerbating the challenges faced by the country. Stan-Labo criticized the decision-making at the political strategic level, highlighting instances where individuals with connections to terrorists were allowed to retain ministerial positions, including one overseeing national data.

The retired colonel argued that the administration under Buhari allowed sentiments such as religion, tribalism, and ethnicity to influence its actions against terrorism. He expressed disappointment at governors, particularly in the northern regions, who seemed to have questionable relationships with terrorist groups and advocated for amnesty, a move that he found shocking and unjustified.

Stan-Labo questioned the concept of granting amnesty to individuals who had engaged in armed conflict against fellow Nigerians, emphasizing the duty of soldiers to ensure justice rather than facilitating repentance. He criticized the apparent shift in focus from apprehending armed combatants to accepting them as repentant individuals, attributing this to influences within the government.

While expressing his concerns about the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, Stan-Labo called for a departure from the previous approach to tackling terrorism. He urged Tinubu’s government to adopt a different strategy and cautioned against succumbing to ill-advised counsel influenced by sympathies for the previous administration.

In assessing the initial months of the new administration, Stan-Labo observed a lack of noticeable changes in the approach to counter-terrorism compared to the preceding eight years. He appealed to military colleagues to adhere to international laws of war but emphasized the necessity of confronting the conflict with a resolute and uncompromising stance to prevent future generations from inheriting an ongoing struggle against terrorism.
