Aladeselu emphasized that the Renewed Hope Cash Transfer, administered by the Federal Government, falls under the National Social Safety Nets Project Scale-Up. Notably, the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, is committed to supporting interventions that provide relief for the impoverished and vulnerable populations, as evidenced by the state’s social register, which encompasses over 1.6 million individuals.
In specific terms, the social register includes approximately 314,000 households, covering a diverse range of recipients, including those with disabilities. The first phase of the programme, implemented in 2022, saw the enrollment and payment of over 12,108 beneficiaries. A total of 40,647 beneficiaries, spanning the 18 local government areas and including individuals with bank accounts, received N25,000 each.
Flora Bossey, the Head of the Edo State Cash Transfer Unit, elucidated that the cash transfer initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s vision to assist 15 million impoverished and vulnerable Nigerians through the Expanded National Social Safety Nets Programme Scale-Up. This scale-up encompasses economic shock response cash transfers in urban areas, as well as extended regular cash transfers in rural regions. It also extends support to existing beneficiaries who have not yet completed 12 payment cycles, mitigating the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
During the training, Mohammed Adams, the Enrolment Officer/Beneficiaries Management Officer of the National Cash Transfer Office, stressed the importance of the facilitators’ role in obtaining biodata for 101,404 individuals lacking valid bank accounts. He emphasized the use of interoperable transactional accounts/wallets to ensure direct fund disbursement, thereby contributing significantly to the financial inclusion of the beneficiaries. Adams urged facilitators to diligently locate and enroll all eligible individuals, leaving no one behind in this impactful intervention during challenging times.
