Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Port Harcourt, braving the morning rain to demand an end to the country’s economic struggles. They marched from Pleasure Park on Aba Road to the Government House.
In response, Governor Fubara addressed the crowd, acknowledging their anger and hunger, and promised that good governance would soon address these issues. He offered temporary aid, stating, “I understand your frustration and am committed to supporting you. However, we must avoid any violence or actions that could harm our state. I will provide some support for you to buy ‘pure water’ and bread.”
The protesters, however, rejected this offer, stating that their demonstration was not about receiving handouts but about demanding better governance and improved living standards.
The governor also voiced concerns about potential attempts to exploit the peaceful protest for destructive purposes. He stated, “You are here for a better Nigeria, and I share your concerns. Our administration is working to improve conditions for our people. However, we are wary of those who might use this protest to create chaos. I appreciate your peaceful approach and assure you that we will relay your concerns to the federal government.”
