According to Naija News, gunshots were fired near the venue of the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led, three-member Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on Wednesday morning, causing lawyers, litigants, politicians, and reporters to seek safety in a panic.
The sudden violence triggered widespread fear as people rushed to avoid stray bullets.
The disturbance occurred at the Edo High Court Complex on Sapele Road, Benin, where the tribunal was convened.
In a statement issued to Naija News, Edo State PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi accused the APC of resorting to desperate tactics to prevent the PDP from reclaiming the mandate given by the people of Edo State during the last governorship election. He claimed that APC thugs, disguised in PDP-branded attire, were deployed to disrupt the legal process while falsely implicating his party.
Aziegbemi firmly distanced the PDP from the shooting incident at the Governorship Election Tribunal in Benin City, Edo State capital. He stated, “Why would the PDP sabotage the only opportunity it has to reclaim the mandate given to it by the people of Edo State? The party understands that justice can only be pursued through the legal system, making it nonsensical for anyone to suggest that we would resort to such disruptive tactics.”
He further accused the APC of orchestrating the chaos, disguising their thugs in PDP attire in an attempt to mislead the public and undermine the legal process.
