High Court Strikes Blow To Ojerinde—Fraud Case Over ₦5.2 Billion Moves Forward
Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the no-case submission filed by former JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, in the ongoing ₦5.2 billion fraud trial brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, the judge held that the prosecution had presented prima facie evidence linking Ojerinde to the alleged crimes, and therefore, he must open his defence.
“The no-case submission is hereby dismissed,” Justice Egwuatu declared. “The prosecution has provided sufficient evidence warranting a response from the defendant.”
The trial was adjourned to July 16 for Ojerinde to begin his defence.
Ojerinde, who previously headed both JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO), is facing an 18-count charge bordering on the criminal diversion of public funds, abuse of office, and conspiracy to defraud the federal government.
ICPC’s lead counsel, Ebenezer Shogunle, said the charges violate multiple sections of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, as well as the Advance Fee Fraud Act, 2006.
Though Ojerinde once sought a plea bargain in February 2022 through his lawyer, Ibrahim Ishyaku (SAN), the agreement fell through, and the trial proceeded. The ICPC eventually closed its case after calling several witnesses, leading to the now-dismissed no-case submission.
Among other allegations, the anti-graft agency claims Ojerinde diverted billions of naira into personal accounts and companies linked to him while serving as registrar, and unlawfully conferred benefits upon himself.
