In the span of January and February 2024, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc has disclosed the detection and documentation of more than 1,459 instances of energy theft. Collaborating with the Federal Government Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences (SIPTEO), the company has initiated investigations and legal proceedings against individuals and businesses involved in such illicit activities.

The power company has intensified its efforts to combat energy theft within its operational areas, targeting offenses such as meter bypass and illegal meter tampering. These unlawful actions have inflicted significant financial losses amounting to hundreds of millions of naira for the company.

Johnson Tinuoye, the Chief Key Accounts Officer of IBEDC, emphasized the establishment of a strategic partnership with SIPTEO to expedite the investigation and prosecution of offenders. He underscored that energy theft is now deemed a criminal offense under the Electricity Act, punishable by severe penalties, including imprisonment.

Recent developments in the Osun region include the apprehension of two individuals engaged in energy theft through meter bypass and illegal connections. Tinuoye revealed that their cases have been officially charged to court for prosecution.

Tinuoye conveyed a clear message to customers that IBEDC will not tolerate energy theft. He stressed the commitment to maintaining a fair and just electricity distribution system, highlighting the detrimental effects of such unlawful activities on the company’s operations and revenue generation.

Customers were strongly advised against participating in energy theft, with emphasis on the serious repercussions and the vigilance of the SIPTEO Task Force in monitoring and investigating such cases without room for negotiation.
