Immediate Suspension Of Mining Activities In Benue State Ordered By Governor Alia

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has issued a decree halting all mining operations within the state until comprehensive data on miners is compiled. This directive came during a meeting with members of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter, held in Makurdi.

Governor Alia further instructed the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to promptly initiate the process of documenting information on all miners operating in the state. This decision was prompted by reports highlighting security concerns associated with mining activities.

Expressing his concern, Governor Alia condemned the contamination of water sources, particularly in Kwande, which has adversely affected residents in the region. He stressed the imperative for security agencies and the joint task force on illegal mining to enforce compliance and uphold the welfare of the populace, along with boosting internally generated revenue.

“The state government stands firm against any form of illegality. Safeguarding the lives and properties of our citizens remains paramount under our administration,” affirmed Governor Alia.
