Inside the Exit: Presidency Reveals Why Egbetokun Stepped Down As IGP
The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has stepped down as Inspector-General of Police.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter on Monday, citing personal and family matters that require his full attention.
“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” Onanuga told Punch.
However, sources indicate that the resignation followed a closed-door meeting between Egbetokun and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening. Insiders suggest that he was asked to step aside during the meeting.
Egbetokun is expected to be replaced by Tunji Disu, currently the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP on June 19, 2023. Prior to his elevation, he served as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. He succeeded Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 after an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that at least 29 senior police officers—including Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General—may also be removed from office in the wake of Egbetokun’s departure. Sources within the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission told Sahara Reporters that the anticipated changes are part of a broader restructuring of the police leadership.
