The convicts, identified as Abraham Itoro Sunday, Ezea Chidera Charles, and Udoh Christopher Gabriel, were prosecuted by the Uyo Zonal Command of the EFCC on separate one-count charges related to cybercrimes. Justice Chigozie Sergius Onah presided over their case.

The charges included fraudulent impersonation on social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram. The court found Abraham Itoro Sunday guilty of fraudulently impersonating Brian O’ Noel on Facebook, violating Section 22 (2)(b)(I) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention) Act 2015.

Upon pleading guilty to the charges, the prosecution counsel, Enobong Ubokudom and Farida Bukar, urged the court to impose appropriate sentences. Subsequently, Justice Onah sentenced Abraham Itoro Sunday and Ezea Chidera Charles to six months imprisonment each, with the option of a fine of N200,000.00. Udoh Christopher Gabriel received a five-month jail term, with an alternative fine of N150,000.00.

Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of the three smartphones used by the convicts in the commission of the crimes to the Federal Government.

The statement revealed that the arrests occurred on November 22, 2023, in Afaha Atai, Iko Eket, Akwa Ibom State, following investigations by EFCC operatives. The convicts, who impersonated foreigners on social media platforms, were identified as ‘Molina Urovsky’ on Facebook (Charles), ‘Brian O’niel’ on Facebook (Sunday), and ‘Alexander Douglas’ on Instagram (Gabriel).

This conviction follows a trend of legal actions against individuals involved in various forms of fraudulent activities, reinforcing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat cybercrimes and related offenses.
