Nigerian Entertainment Industry Mourns The Loss Of Jimi Solanke
Renowned actor and dramatist, Jimi Solanke, has passed away just 59 days shy of his 82nd birthday. Solanke’s influence on the global entertainment scene spans an impressive seven decades, leaving an enduring legacy from his early days at Western Nigeria Television in the 1960s to captivating performances at international festivals in Senegal and Algeria during the 1970s.
His artistic brilliance shone through in memorable performances, including “Death and the King’s Horseman,” “Kurunmi,” “Kongi’s Harvest,” “The Divorce,” and “Ovaramwen Nogbaisi.” The Oxford Times lauded him as a “Skilled Nigerian Actor,” and the New York Times acknowledged him as the standout star of an “Excellent Troupe” during a rendition of Wole Soyinka’s “Kongi’s Harvest.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state officially confirmed Solanke’s demise, expressing condolences to the family and recognizing it as a monumental loss to the local theater community. Governor Abiodun emphasized Solanke’s consistent efforts in bringing acclaim to the state, especially in the arts, tracing back to his days at the University of Ibadan School of Drama.
