Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his belief that Nigeria will overcome the current socio-economic uncertainties with the help of God. While acknowledging the federal government’s efforts to address the situation, Jonathan emphasized the need for collective action to find solutions to the economic challenges.
Jonathan made these remarks during the opening of the “2024 Annual Law Week” of the Yenagoa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Yenagoa. The event’s theme, “The Legal Profession in a Time of Socio-Economic Uncertainty,” was described by Jonathan as timely and reflective of the urgent need to address governance issues for the wellbeing of citizens.
Represented by HRM Collins Daniel, Paramount Ruler of the Abureni Clan, Jonathan drew parallels to past economic hardships in Nigeria, including the Structural Adjustment Programme under General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration in the mid-1980s and the global recession between 2016 and 2019. He expressed confidence that the current challenges would also be surmounted.
Justice Obande Ogbuinya of the Supreme Court delivered a keynote speech titled “Socio-Economic Uncertainty of Legal Practices in Nigeria: The Law in the Global Economy.” He highlighted the global nature of the economic crisis and its severe impact on Nigeria, including high inflation, decreased purchasing power, and the devaluation of the Naira. Ogbuinya stressed the pervasive issue of corruption and its detrimental effects on society.
Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), echoed the sentiment that the economic crisis is a global issue, urging lawyers to be innovative and seize opportunities despite the challenges. He assured that the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, is committed to supporting vulnerable populations and resolving the economic situation.
Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, underscored the importance of the legal profession in times of economic uncertainty. She called for the creation of new laws and the interpretation of existing ones to adapt to changing circumstances, emphasizing the role of legal practitioners in maintaining stability, justice, and governance.
The event served as a platform for reflection on governance issues and the essential role of collective efforts in overcoming economic difficulties.
