While the State Executive Council has not convened since the resignation of nine members, recent reports suggest that Governor Fubara, following discussions in Abuja brokered by President Bola Tinubu, met with key administration members to strategize the implementation of the Abuja deal.
Notable figures such as Edwin Clark, Femi Falana, and Chief Rufus Ada-George have voiced objections to the implementation of the peace accord.
The political unrest erupted on October 30 when State House of Assembly Leader Edison Ehie was ousted, seen as an attempt to remove Wike’s loyalists. The subsequent impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara led to the defection of 27 lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the resignation of key government officials.
President Tinubu intervened, hosting a meeting with key stakeholders, including Governor Fubara, Minister Nyesom Wike, and former Governor Peter Odili, resulting in a peace agreement. The resolution directed the withdrawal of court cases related to the political crisis and the immediate halt of impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
Critics, however, condemned the agreement, asserting that it contradicted existing laws. Some, like former Commissioner David Briggs, claimed Fubara signed under duress, alleging intimidation by President Tinubu.
The Elders and Leaders Forum also rejected the deal, asserting that it violated the constitution. However, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, maintained that Fubara willingly endorsed the agreement and was committed to its implementation.
In response to these developments, Governor Fubara reportedly cleared the entitlements of the 27 lawmakers who defected to the APC and provided cars to his cabinet members. Johnson assured that the governor is actively working towards solidifying peace in the state, aligning with the directives outlined in the controversial peace agreement.
