The meeting comes at a time of shifting alliances in the state. Governor Yusuf recently left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Earlier, Shekarau had criticised Rabiu Kwankwaso for describing Yusuf’s defection as a betrayal. In a video shared on his official WhatsApp platform, Shekarau argued that the governor has every right to choose his political affiliation, noting that such decisions should not be seen as disloyalty, especially as political figures often make similar moves.
Explaining his decision, Yusuf said his move to the APC was aimed at aligning Kano State more closely with the Federal Government in order to accelerate development.
He made this known during the 2026 Grand Rally held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where a large crowd gathered to welcome him into the ruling party. His position was also outlined in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.
The governor emphasized Kano’s political and economic importance, stating that the state should not remain disconnected from the centre of national power.
In a related development, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor and leader of the NNPP, has now joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He officially registered as a member at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Kano, in an event attended by prominent political figures including David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun.
