In response, the Kano State government has eased the 24-hour curfew by reducing it to six hours daily, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., to alleviate the impact on residents.
The protests, largely led by youths, have taken place in various areas including Bakin Zuwo, Koki in Dala Local Government Area, Sharada in Kano Municipal, and Gadon Kaya in Gwale Local Government Area. Demonstrators were seen waving Russian flags and expressing their desire for assistance from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
An eyewitness from Bakin Zuwo, Malam Salisu, reported to Vanguard that the protesters were actively voicing their grievances against bad governance. “I saw a large crowd around 10 a.m., waving Russian flags and protesting issues such as insecurity and economic hardship,” Salisu said.
Additionally, a resident posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing protesters in Bakin Zuwo with Russian flags, chanting “koya gyara sai ya sauka,” meaning “whether he adjusts or not, he must go.” The post, captioned “Hunger protest continues in Kano for the fourth day. This follows the President’s ineffective speech,” highlights the ongoing dissatisfaction with the government’s response.
