Speaking on Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast, Badenoch remarked that while she is “Nigerian through ancestry,” she doesn’t strongly identify as Nigerian, stating, “by identity, I’m not really.”

In a follow-up interview with GB News, Badenoch — who was born in the UK and spent part of her childhood in Nigeria — reaffirmed her connection to her Nigerian heritage but emphasized that she identifies primarily as British.

“It wasn’t exactly what I said, but yes, it’s true — my primary identity is British. That’s how I see myself,” she explained.

She further elaborated: “Nigeria is a nationality, not an ethnicity. There’s no single Nigerian language — the country is made up of many ethnic groups.

When you come to the UK, it’s important to focus on integration. And as a politician, your attention should be fully on British matters.”
