Numerous video clips have circulated, depicting the dismantling of substantial structures by the state government due to various infractions.
Despite claims suggesting a bias targeting residents of Igbo extraction, the government has refuted such allegations.
Addressing the ongoing attention to these claims, the Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, took to his official social media handle on Monday.
He announced that a stern ultimatum had been issued to owners of structures violating drainage laws.
Wahab stated that a seven-day contravention notice has been served to owners of buildings situated “within the seven meters drainage setback on Orchid Road, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, Oral Estate II, all along the Ikota River” due to drainage-related issues.
In his post, Wahab emphasized the necessity of enforcing regulations to combat flooding, attributing it to the actions of developers, builders, and residents.
He highlighted specific areas like Chevron Drive, where a stop-work order was issued to Gravitas company, owners of Grace Ville Island & Pocket Island.
The post concluded with a call for Lagosians to adhere to the State Drainage Master Plan, cautioning that non-compliance may result in property demolitions, as the state remains resolute in enforcing the law and reclaiming drainage setbacks after the expiration of issued notices.
