Lagos State Takes Action, Closes Ogba City Mall and Ajah Market For Waste Offenses

This move was executed by a joint enforcement team comprising the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (LASTMA), and the Lagos Government Special Environmental Corps (KAI).

A statement issued by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, revealed the shutdown on Sunday in Lagos.

Kadiri clarified that the enforcement team also dismantled shanties and illegal trader structures along the Ajah BRT corridor and the Ajah Jubilee Bridge.

Commenting on this development, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, stressed that the enforcement was part of the ongoing campaign against uncleanliness and improper waste disposal at markets and business establishments throughout the state.

“We are intensifying our efforts to tackle this administration’s firm stance against unsanitary conditions and haphazard waste disposal by traders and businesses.

We’ve been consistently warning business owners about the consequences if they fail to manage their waste appropriately,” Wahab stated.

He affirmed the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration to pursue this noble goal for the greater good of the public.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, emphasized that the zero-tolerance initiative is an ongoing campaign and urged market and business stakeholders to take responsibility for maintaining clean and hygienic premises.

“For numerous occasions, we’ve been advocating for all business owners and markets to reject unclean conditions and implement strategies ensuring proper waste disposal on their premises,” Gbadegesin added.
