NANS Threatens Nationwide Protest, Vows To Hold Government Hostage Over Fuel Price Hike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has confirmed plans to proceed with a nationwide protest in response to the recent increase in petrol prices.
Henry Okuomo, the Senate President of NANS, announced this decision during an appearance on Channels Television on Friday, September 6. He emphasized that the protest is a necessary step due to the current economic hardships faced by Nigerians, including students who are directly impacted by the fuel price hike. Okuomo stated, “We are not merely threatening a strike; this is a definitive action. With over 40 million students in Nigeria, we believe it is crucial to make our voices heard to alleviate the undue stress and suffering imposed by the government. We are committed to taking to the streets on the 15th of this month, with no turning back.”
This announcement follows a recent confusion where NANS President Afeez Akinteye had initially denied any plans for a protest. A circular circulating on social media suggested that NANS was planning a strike over the fuel price increase. Akinteye had previously denounced the circular as false and called for an investigation into the misinformation, asserting that NANS was not organizing any protests.
Akinteye clarified, “We urge the public and media to disregard these false reports. The individuals spreading these rumors are seeking to misuse the NANS name for their own agendas. We call on security agencies to investigate and identify those responsible for this misinformation, as it undermines national security and harms the students who are genuinely seeking positive change.
