The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has quietly hired 17 new staff members, including 11 from northern Nigeria, raising alarms about regional favoritism and poor leadership within the organization.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sources informed SaharaReporters that the recruitment process was shrouded in secrecy, sparking concerns about the NCC’s management practices. The hiring occurred against the backdrop of declining revenues and worsening service quality in Nigeria’s telecom industry. Despite the sector’s contribution to GDP falling from 16.43% to 13.21%, and widespread dissatisfaction with service quality, the NCC leadership has been criticized for prioritizing staff expansion over addressing the industry’s pressing issues.

Of the 17 new hires, 11 are from northern Nigeria, two from the South-East, and four from the South-West, leading to concerns about regional bias in the recruitment process, especially in light of the sector’s ongoing challenges.

“With telecom contributions to GDP dropping from 16.43% to 13.21%, and with service quality deteriorating, the NCC leadership seems preoccupied with secret staff appointments rather than tackling these critical issues,” said a source within the commission.

This latest hiring move follows controversy surrounding a recent promotion exam within the NCC, which has also been criticized for irregularities and favoritism, further fueling frustrations over the commission’s operations.

“Already, the recent promotion exam is embroiled in controversy. What is happening at the NCC? Who’s in charge? Is anyone paying attention?” the source questioned, highlighting concerns over the growing dysfunction at the commission.
