On Wednesday, the Presidency refuted claims that the Bola Tinubu administration was contemplating relocating the Federal Capital of Nigeria back to Lagos, its former location. The controversy arose following recent decisions by the Federal Government to move the Department of Banking Supervision of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the head office of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria to Lagos. Northern senators and youths expressed dissatisfaction, alleging a deliberate attempt to disadvantage the North.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial, claimed that President Tinubu was being misled by “political cartels” from Lagos, emphasizing potential “political consequences” of the planned relocation. In response, the Presidency, through the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the claims and emphasized the permanence of Abuja as the Federal Capital, backed by law.

Onanuga asserted that the rumors were initiated by political opponents seeking to hinder Tinubu’s presidential aspirations. He clarified that the recent decisions regarding the CBN and FAAN were administrative moves, not indicative of relocating the entire Federal Capital to Lagos.

The Presidency further argued that the relocation of FAAN’s head office to Abuja during the past administration did not amount to moving the Federal Capital to Lagos. Onanuga stressed that these decisions should not trigger discord, as Lagos is the commercial capital and aviation hub of Nigeria.

Addressing critics, Onanuga affirmed the administration’s commitment to fairness and equity across the country. He urged restraint among those spreading falsehoods, distracting the government from its goal of meeting the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.

In response to Senator Ndume’s comments, Senator Karimi Sunday of Kogi-West criticized Ndume, stating that his remarks were personal and did not represent the Senate’s position. Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, cautioned Ndume for his provocative statements in an open letter.

Meanwhile, former President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri, appealed to President Tinubu to consider relocating critical federal agencies involved in the oil business to the Niger Delta region. Eradiri suggested the decongestion of Abuja and urged Tinubu to compel the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to move subsidiaries’ headquarters to capital cities in the Niger Delta for enhanced security and development.
