Speaking on , Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, condemned Obi’s statements, calling them inappropriate for a former presidential contender.
“We shall never forget and forgive Peter Obi for supporting a foreign invasion of Nigeria,” Onanuga stated, asserting that Obi’s remarks effectively welcomed military involvement by a foreign power.
At a recent event, Obi criticized the Federal Government for allegedly downplaying insecurity and what he described as targeted attacks on Christians. He argued that the deteriorating security situation had brought Nigeria to a point where external assistance could no longer be ignored.
Obi used an analogy to explain his position, saying, “It is like a starving family being offered food. If someone offers sustenance and you refuse, you are only prolonging the suffering. Take the help first, then figure out how to manage it.”
He further outlined what he sees as Nigeria’s three immediate priorities to tackle insecurity:
-
Protecting lives and property – ensuring the safety of citizens is paramount.
-
Reducing poverty – alleviating poverty will help curb crime.
-
Investing in education – neglecting millions of out-of-school children today will create future security threats.
Obi warned, “A child who is five or ten today without education could become a terrorist or a societal problem in 20 years. We must invest in them now.”
He also criticized corruption within the political class, saying, “Those stealing public funds are not in need—they are only creating problems for the country.”
Regarding Trump’s remarks, Obi described them as a potential opportunity, saying, “For me, it is a welcome speech that I would have been begging him for…”
