Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Ado Ekiti organized by the Ekiti State Farmers/Herders Peace Committee, Ogundana emphasized that the ban aligns with existing laws aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists.
He stated, “We have the Anti-Grazing Law enacted by the state House of Assembly. This law prohibits night grazing, forbids minors from herding, and bans grazing on farmlands. Violators will face legal consequences.”
Ogundana also highlighted that the Herders/Farmers Peace Committee was established by Governor Biodun Oyebanji in 2023 to address conflicts between farmers and herders and to enforce compliance with the anti-grazing regulations.
He urged traditional rulers, local government leaders, and representatives from both farming and herding communities to create forums for dialogue, promoting interdependence and addressing issues of suspicion and trespassing. This collaborative effort is intended to ensure adherence to the anti-grazing law.
Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, noted that the government plans to invest further in agriculture in 2025, stressing the importance of protecting farmers and their lands. He revealed that over N2 billion has already been invested in agriculture this year alone.
The Commissioner of Police, Adeniran Akinwale, commended the governor’s initiatives to maintain peace and security, urging traditional leaders to establish local security groups to safeguard their communities.
The Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, represented by Oba Gabriel Adejuwon, called for heightened vigilance among security agencies, expressing confidence in the government’s commitment to ensuring safety and security throughout the state.
