Nigeria Customs Denies Allegations f Violating Retirement RulesThe Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has rejected allegations made by the civil society group Societal Safety Network (SSN), which accused senior officers of violating mandatory retirement procedures.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, SSN claimed that certain officers were deliberately bypassing the provisions of the 2023 Customs Act and civil service rules by failing to go on terminal leave as required. The group expressed concerns about the potential impact of this alleged non-compliance on the NCS’s leadership integrity and organizational structure.

SSN spokesperson Sunday Asuku warned that if such actions were left unaddressed, they could lead to a scandal that would harm the reputation of the NCS. He called on President Bola Tinubu to step in, enforce adherence to retirement laws, and promote meritocracy within the agency.

“As we speak, senior officers who are due for retirement are refusing to vacate their offices. This disrupts the NCS’s organizational structure,” Asuku said. “It blocks the promotion of newly appointed officers and hinders recruitment, which is especially concerning at a time when the government is focused on reducing youth unemployment in Nigeria.”

While acknowledging recent reforms led by the Comptroller-General of Customs, the SSN cautioned that these advancements could be undermined if the alleged violations were not quickly addressed. “This situation is brewing into a potential scandal, and if not handled immediately, it will tarnish the image of the NCS,” Asuku added.

In response to the allegations, NCS spokesperson Abubakar Maiwada dismissed the claims as baseless. “These allegations are completely unfounded. They are merely trying to be excessively proactive. There is no such issue in the service. I am currently in the office, and I have not seen any officer who is supposed to be retired still occupying their position,” Maiwada stated.
