The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, after lawmakers deliberated on the matter in the Committee of the Whole.
The Senate unanimously endorsed the Federal Government’s move to send troops across the border to help restore peace and stability following the recent attempted coup in Benin Republic.
While announcing the decision, Akpabio declared, “An injury to one is an injury to all.” He confirmed that the Senate’s formal approval would be immediately transmitted to President Tinubu.
Earlier on Tuesday, Akpabio had read a letter from the President seeking the Senate’s consent for the deployment as part of an ECOWAS-backed peacekeeping mission.
Tinubu explained that the intervention followed a direct request for support from Benin’s President, Patrice Talon, after the failed coup attempt.
He further noted that the operation aligns with ECOWAS security protocols as well as Section 5, Part II of the Nigerian Constitution, approved in consultation with the National Defence Council.
