Outrage Erupts As Remi Tinubu ‘Mocks’ Patience Jonathan During Event — Nigerians React

A viral social media clip captured the moment Mrs. Tinubu paused her speech to acknowledge dignitaries and then addressed Mrs. Jonathan, who was seated among the guests. Dressed in a white ceremonial outfit, she turned to the former First Lady and said:
“Your Eminence, the Sultan and all the other Obas. Mama P, I thank you ooo, you will not smile? Mama P, I’m greeting you. Thank you very much for being there.”
She continued her remarks, thanking traditional rulers in attendance:
“But I said I wanted to greet our royal fathers who have come to honour Ooni and, by extension, me; everybody said I should just leave protocols. The Oloris can now sit down. I thank the royal fathers who came from far and near, and even a representative from my mother’s side is here. I thank you all.”
The exchange triggered mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians describing the interaction as informal and inappropriate for the ceremonial occasion.
A user on X identified as Tochukwu wrote:
“Her status may appear to have changed, but her innate mannerism remains as uncouth and classless as always.”
Another user, Wendu, commented:
“This woman is uncouth… She’s been this way even before becoming First Lady. Nigeria has rich people but hardly any elites.”
A Facebook user named Tobi added:
“Worst thing to ever happen to this nation is having this family as a figure.”
Mesiri, another critic, stated:
“You called the king of your mother’s nation a representative? Failed to salute him traditionally? Shameful.”
Robustlife on X questioned her pastoral credentials:
“I wonder what the Redeemed Church saw in her… I’m beginning to look at some churches differently.”
However, not all responses were negative. A user named Kelez defended the First Lady, urging restraint:
“We must not make issues out of nothing because she’s Tinubu. It seemed like a light-hearted effort to make Mama Peace smile—the delivery may have been crude, but the intent matters more.”
