Organized labor has emphasized its flexibility regarding the minimum wage, stating that no specific figure is deemed absolute. The tripartite committee tasked with deliberating on the new minimum wage recently concluded its discussions, presenting two figures to President Bola Tinubu for his consideration.
While the government and private sector propose N62,000, organized labor insists on N250,000. However, speaking on Channels Television, Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo highlighted that labor remains open to adjustments and negotiations, dismissing the notion of fixating on any single figure.
Osifo stated, “When we propose figures, there’s always room for flexibility, for adjustments. No figure is sacred or set in stone. Our previous industrial action was partly due to the rigidity encountered when the figure reached N60,000, with authorities claiming an inability to add even a kobo.”
President Tinubu is expected to forward an executive bill to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
