A Federal High Court in Kano has mandated the Kano State Government to pay N10 million in compensation for violating the fundamental human rights of Aminu Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano. The ruling was delivered by Justice Simon Amobeda in response to a lawsuit filed by Bayero seeking enforcement of his rights.

Justice Amobeda deemed Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive for Bayero’s arrest unlawful, resulting in the Emir being confined to house arrest out of fear of arrest. The lawsuit named several respondents including the Attorney General of the Federation and Kano State, as well as various security agencies.

The court ordered the second, third, fourth, and fifth respondents to refrain from further arrests, detentions, threats, intimidation, or harassment of Bayero, protecting his rights as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

In his judgment, Justice Amobeda stated, ‘The Governor’s directive to arrest the Applicant without legal justification threatens his liberty, as guaranteed under Section 35(1) of the Constitution, and restricts his movement, violating Section 41(1).’ The ruling further requires the Kano State Government to pay N10 million for breaching Bayero’s rights to liberty and freedom of movement.
