NLC Defends Position On Minimum Wage Against Governors’ Interference....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the recent proposal by the Southern Governors Forum to allow states to independently determine their minimum wage. The governors, meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun state, argued that wages should reflect local economic conditions and each state’s financial capacity. However, NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, denounced this move as authoritarian, stating it undermines the national consensus on minimum wage and poses a threat to workers’ welfare and the national economy.

Upah emphasized that a national minimum wage sets a crucial baseline ensuring decent living standards for all workers, contrasting it with the uniform pay scales for political office holders. He criticized this disparity, arguing it privileges a few while neglecting the majority. Meanwhile, negotiations between labour unions, government, and the private sector continue amid proposals ranging from N62,000 to N265,000, with President Bola Tinubu pledging to consider affordability before forwarding a bill to the National Assembly.
